The White House was locked down on Saturday evening after multiple gunshots were heard nearby, as journalists on the North Lawn were rushed inside.
Members of several media organizations, some who were reporting live, reported hearing what they thought were gunshots before the Secret Service told them to seek shelter inside the press briefing room.
Law enforcement officials told CNN that uniformed officers fired back at person who shooting toward the White House after approaching a checkpoint to the campus, CNN and Fox News reported.
Two people were wounded in the shooting, both of whom have been taken to the hospital — the suspected shooter is in critical condition and a bystander is in serious condition, CBS News reported.
The shooter was later proclaimed dead at the hospital, according to a Secret Service statement.
President Trump has been working at the White House all day and was in the residence when the shooting occurred, according to reports.
“FBI is on the scene and supporting Secret Service responding to shots fired near the White House grounds — we will update the public as we’re able to,” FBI Director Kash Patel said in a post on X.
The Secret Service said in a statement that it is investigating shots there were fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.
Reporters from CBS and ABC reported that they heard what sounded like multiple gunshots — between 15 and 30 shots were reportedly fired — where after they ducked Secret Service agents told the media to “sprint to the press briefing room.”
