An earthquake measuring 4.1 magnitude was recorded by scientists just west of Las Vegas on Thursday afternoon, with no reports of damage thus far.
The temblor was felt throughout the Las Vegas Valley at 1:47 p.m. local time about 14 miles west of the city in Summerlin, Nev., the United States Geological Survey reported.
The earthquake was recorded by roughly 30 different stations, including the University of Nevada-Reno’s Seismological Laboratory, KTNV-Las Vegas reported.
USGS reported on its ShakeMap that most of the quake’s effects were felt east of the epicenter toward Las Vegas, although the estimates suggest that those effects were between weak and light, if at all.
Local reports, including Fox5 and KSNV said that there had been no immediate reports of damage, but that that could change.
Nevada is one of the most seismically active regions in the world, Daniel Trugman, of the University of Nevada-Reno’s Seismological Laboratory reported in a study in 2024.
The study cataloged more than 180,000 earthquakes in the state between 2008 and 2023.
The USGS reports that, on a regular basis, there are between 10 and 20 earthquakes of at least 1.0 magnitude in the area northwest of Summerlin, Nev.
