Rex Heuermann, the man accused of a string of serial killings in Gilgo Beach on Long Island, was charged with a seventh murder on Tuesday.

Prosecutors had promised a “major development” in the case against Heuermann, who was charged in the November 2000 death of Valerie Mack, whose remains were found in Manorville and Gilgo Beach. Advertisement

Heuermann, a New York architect, has been charged in the deaths of six other women, all suspected sex workers, whose remains were discovered in a remote spot along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach and parts of eastern Long Island.

Prosecutors claimed that they connected Heuermann to Mack’s death in June because of a device found in his Long Island home where he supposedly kept detailed notes about serial killings, body disposals, and torture pornography.

Prosecutors have said Heuermann kept detailed notes about serial killings, body disposal, and torture pornography. Mack was identified through DNA, authorities said.

Prosecutors said they have been able to pull together DNA evidence, burner phone data, witness description of a truck allegedly belonging to Heuermann and his Internet searches to make their case that he is a serial killer. Advertisement

Authorities still have the challenge of processing the 120 terabytes of data from some 400 devices seized from Heuermann.

In June, Heuermann entered not-guilty pleas in the deaths of Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla. In July 2023, he was charged in the deaths of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Lynn Costello, Melissa Barthelemy, and Megan Waterman.

Their remains were found in burlap bags along Gilgo Beach’s Ocean Parkway in 2010.
