U.S. employers added 122,000 workers in May, beating the Dow Jones consensus estimate, ADP’s monthly job report, released Wednesday, showed.

The new payrolls in May are an increase over the 105,000 jobs added in April. The Dow Jones consensus estimate forecasted 110,000 new payrolls in May.

May’s jobs report stands as the strongest month of workforce growth since President Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025.

Education and health services continued to lead all sectors, adding 57,000 workers. However, the job growth was spread more evenly across sectors than in recent months. Trade, transportation and utilities added 36,000 workers, professional and business services increased by 11,000 and leisure and hospitality climbed by 8,000.

“Hiring was more broad-based in May than we’ve seen in the last few years,” Dr. Nela Richardson, chief economist with ADP, said in a statement. “The labor market continues to show sustained momentum going into the summer hiring season.”

Companies of all sizes showed growth, led by small businesses with less than 20 employees adding 49,000 jobs. Large companies with more than 500 employees added 40,000.

Not all sectors posted gains in May. Natural resources and mining jobs fell by 3,000 and information services fell by 9,000.
