Cincinnati Bengals guard Cordell Volson will undergo shoulder surgery and is expected to miss the 2025 season, coach Zac Taylor told reporters Wednesday.
“It’s a tough one for him,” Taylor said. “He’s been a guy thats really worked hard for us.”
Taylor said Volson sustained the injury to his right shoulder during practice and that his playing status will be confirmed after he has surgery.
Volson, who started 48 games over the last three seasons, is listed as a backup left guard, behind Dylan Fairchild, on the Bengals’ unofficial depth chart. Lucas Patrick is listed as the starter at right guard, in front of second-string guard Cody Ford.
Jaxson Kirkland and Andrew Stueber are among the Bengals’ other reserve guards.
Backup tackle Jalen Rivers filled n for Patrick at guard when he left with an injury during the Bengals’ 31-17 preseason win over the Washington Commanders on Monday in Landover, Md.
Taylor said Wednesday that Patrick’s injury is not as “severe as initially thought” and will be managed throughout the week. Taylor also said the Bengals are still “working through it,” when asked if they would address the position in free agency.
Volson, a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, appeared in 50 games over the last three seasons, including 17 in 2024.
Pro Football Focus gave Volson the 46th-best offensive rating among guards who were in for at least 50% of the maximum snaps played at the position in 2024. He received the 57th-best pass-block rating among qualifying players.
Bengals starters will not play during their preseason finale against the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday in Cincinnati. The Bengals will open the regular season against the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 7 in Cleveland.
