The Indianapolis Colts placed cornerback Charvarius Ward on injured reserve and signed quarterback Brett Rypien from their practice squad, the team announced Wednesday.

The Colts also signed kicker Blake Grupe to their active roster and signed quarterback Philip Rivers and center Jimmy Morrissey for their practice squad.

Ward sustained his third concussion of the season and is required to miss at least four games due to being placed injured reserve. The veteran cornerback, who signed a three-year, $42.5 million deal with the Colts last off-season in free agency, totaled 25 combined tackles, seven passes defensed and a fumble recovery over seven starts this season.

Colts coach Shane Steichen said Ward reported concussion symptoms Monday.

Mekhi Blackmon, Jaylon Jones, Johnathan Edwards, Cameron Mitchell and Kenny Moore are among the healthy cornerbacks available for the Colts, who also lost starter Sauce Gardner to a calf strain in Week 13. The Colts placed backup cornerback Chris Lammons and starting quarterback Daniel Jones on injured reserve Tuesday.

Rypien will join rookie Riley Leonard as the only quarterbacks on the Colts’ active roster. Leonard, who is dealing with a knee injury, completed 18 of 29 passes for 145 yards and an interception in the Colts’ 36-19 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday in Jacksonville, Fla. He also ran for a score.

Rypien spent a brief time on the Cincinnati Bengals’ active roster earlier this season, but was released in October. The Colts signed the veteran quarterback to their practice squad about a week later. Rypien completed 58.3% of his throws for 950 yards, four scores and nine interceptions over 11 career appearances.

Grupe, who was released by the New Orleans Saints in November, made two field goal attempts and an extra point in the Colts’ Week 14 loss to the Jaguars.

The Colts (8-5) will face the Seattle Seahawks (10-3) at 4:25 p.m. EST Sunday in Seattle.
