Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell wants to move All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell to left tackle, he told reporters Monday at the NFL annual meetings.
Sewell last played left tackle in 2019 at Oregon. He moved to the other side of the offensive line after joining the Lions as the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Drafter.
The 6-foot-5, 335-pound offensive lineman made 83 starts over his first five seasons. Sewell was a first-team All-Pro selections each of the last three years.
“I’ve talked to him,” Campbell said, according to the Detroit Free Press. “We’re ready to do that if need be. I don’t want to say that right now I’m going to commit to that, but that’s — we’re ready to do that. And all he wants is a couple days to work his left-handed stance a little bit.
“It’s a little bit like riding a bike for him. He’ll be fine. He’ll be fine. He’ll bank some reps and be able to do it, but he gives us that flexibility.
The Lions started Taylor Decker at left tackle last season. Decker, who started 140 games for the Lions over the last 10 years, and center Graham Glasgow, who appeared in 110 games for the Lions over seven seasons, were released earlier this month.
The Lions then signed veteran offensive tackle Larry Borom to a one-year deal in free agency. They also signed center Cade Mays to a three-year pact.
Gio Manu, Colby Sorsdal and Devin Cochran are among the Lions’ other tackles. Christian Mahogany and Tate Ratledge are set to start at left and right guard, respectively.
