The Walt Disney Co. announced Tuesday that Josh D’Amaro will be its new chief executive officer, succeeding Bob Iger.

The company also announced the promotion of Dana Walden to president and chief creative officer.

D’Amaro, 56, is the company’s chairman of the experiences division, heading operations of Disney’s parks. He will assume the role of CEO on March 18.

“Josh D’Amaro possesses that rare combination of inspiring leadership and innovation, a keen eye for strategic growth opportunities, and a deep passion for the Disney brand and its people — all of which make him the right person to take the helm as Disney’s next CEO,” James Gorman, chairman of Disney’s board of directors, said in a statement.

Iger will remain with Disney as a senior adviser until Dec. 31, when he is expected to retire from the company. He was Disney’s CEO from 2005 to 2020, then returned in 2022.

“Josh D’Amaro is an exceptional leader and the right person to become our next CEO,” Iger said.

The search for Iger’s successor has lasted several years as the board reviewed candidates.

“I am immensely grateful to the board for entrusting me with leading a company that means so much to me and millions around the world,” D’Amaro said in a statement.

Walden, 61, is the company’s entertainment co-chair. She will become president and chief creative officer on March 18 and will report to D’Amaro. Her role will be focused on storytelling and content.

“Dana Walden is an excellent leader who commands tremendous respect from the creative community,” Iger said. “Given that creativity is at the heart of everything Disney does, she is a wonderful choice to serve in this new leadership role.”
