Minnesota Vikings second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy is out for a third consecutive week because of his sprained right ankle, the team announced Friday.
Carson Wentz is in line to start for the Vikings in their Week 5 game against the Cleveland Browns in London on Sunday. Max Brosmer and Desmond Ridder are the other quarterbacks on the Vikings’ roster.
The Vikings also ruled out linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel and offensive linemen Donovan Jackson, Ryan Kelly, Michael Jurgens and Brian O’Neill against the Browns. Linebacker Tyler Batty, fullback C.J. Ham and tight end Ben Yurosek are questionable.
The Browns ruled out defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. Offensive tackle Jack Conklin and cornerback Greg Newsome II are questionable.
Wentz, who signed a one-year deal with the Vikings in August, completed 30 of 46 passes for 350 yards, two scores and two interceptions in the Vikings’ 24-21 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday in Dublin, Ireland.
The 10-year veteran completed 14 of 20 passes for 173 yards and two scores in his first start this season, a 48-10 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 21 in Minneapolis.
McCarthy, who missed his entire rookie campaign because of a right knee injury, completed 24 of 41 passes for 301 yards, two scores and three interceptions through his first two starts this season. He sustained a high-ankle sprain in the Vikings’ Week 2 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
The Vikings (2-2) will battle the Browns (1-3) at 9:30 a.m. EDT Sunday.
