The New York Jets placed the franchise tag on running back Breece Hall, but will continue contract negotiations, a league source told UPI on Tuesday.
Hall will make $14.293 million in 2026 if he plays under the terms of the one-year, non-exclusive tender. The second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft was to hit free agency this off-season.
Jets general manager Darren Mougey told reporters last week at the NFL scouting combine that the tag was an option for Hall.
“Ideally, we’d find a way to get a deal done and keep Breece around,” Mougey said. “I think I’ve said that for the last year since I got here. Breece is a good player.”
Hall, 24, logged a career-high 1,065 rushing yards and four scores on 243 attempts last season. He also caught 36 passes for 350 yards and a score over 16 starts.
The four-year veteran logged at least 1,350 yards from scrimmage in each of his last three NFL campaigns. Hall totaled a career-high 1,585 yards from scrimmage and nine scores over 17 appearances in 2023, his second NFL season.
NFL teams have a deadline of 4 p.m. EST Tuesday to place franchise tags on players. Under the terms of Hall’s tender, he is free to negotiate with other teams and sign an offer sheet.
The Jets would receive to first-round draft picks as compensation if they decline to match another team’s offer for the running back.
Mougey said he believes Hall wants to remain with the Jets.
“I do get the sense that Breece wants to be here,” Mougey said. “We’ve had good conversations throughout the season, after the season. So, it’s just [about] finding a way to do that.”
NFL free agency will start Monday, the first day of the new league year. The Jets and Hall have a July 15 deadline to reach a long-term agreement.
