Police in a Chicago suburb on Tuesday arrested a TikTok user who is acussed of livestreaming while running a red light and fatally colliding with a man ziowho was crossing the street.
Tynesha McCarty-Wroten, 43, of Zion, was charged with reckless homicide and aggravated use of a communication device causing death, the Lake and McHenry County Scanner reported.
The arrest of McCarty-Wroten, who uses the TikTok handle Tea_Tyme_3, comes over a month after Darren Lucas was fatally struck while crossing a street in Zion.
Zion Police Department Lt. Paul Kehrli told the news outlet that McCarty-Wroten remained at the scene, called 911 and was cooperative with investigators. She told investigators she had a green light at the time of the collision, but police later became aware of a video reportedly showing McCarty-Wroten running a red light, according to the news outlet.
“I just hit somebody,” McCarty-Wroten reportedly says in the video after a loud thump, followed by cursing and a child’s voice asking what happened.
Lucas, 59, was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, reported Fox 32 Chicago. A 2015 Ford Edge was involved in the crash, according to the station.
Kehrli told the Scanner that police seized her phone and that TikTok cooperated with the investigation.
“Our grieving will last forever, but seeing justice starting to happen helps,” Chris King, Lucas’ son-in-law, told the Scanner.
