A Delta Air Lines flight en route to Atlanta was forced to turn around and return to Houston’s William P. Hobby on Wednesday morning after a passenger attempted to enter the cockpit, airline officials said.
Delta told Houston’s Chron news outlet that the passenger was “exhibiting unruly and unlawful behavior” toward fellow passengers during the Flight 2557, which departed around 5:30 a.m.
The pilot of the flight declared an emergency after the passenger allegedly tried to access the cockpit, CNN reported.
“We had a passenger get up and try to access the cockpit,” the pilot said over radio communications.
“Can you coordinate and have security standing by?” the pilot asked air traffic control. He is “in cuffs in the back of the aircraft, but he did assault another passenger, so we would like that other passenger checked out.”
Houston police told KRIV-TV in Houston that the passenger causing the disturbance may have been experiencing a mental health crisis. It’s unclear if they will face charges for the incident.
