The Washington Commanders split with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr., a league source told UPI.
Commanders coach Dan Quinn met with Kingsbury on Tuesday to discus the future of the offense. Quinn and Kingsbury mutually agreed to part ways after those conversations.
The Commanders fired Whitt, whose defense allowed the most yards in the NFL in 2025. They allowed the 13th fewest yards on defense in 2024, Whitt’s first season. Quinn took over defensive play calling duties after 10 games in 2025. The Commanders (5-12) were 3-7 at the time.
The Commanders ranked 22nd offensively, with the No. 4 running game and 24th passing attack in 2025. They owned the league’s No. 7 offense, with the No. 3 rushing attack and No. 17 passing game, in 2024, Kingsbury’s first season.
The Commanders allowed the most yards and points in the NFL in 2023, former head coach Ron Rivera’s final season. The Commanders fired Rivera on Jan. 8, 2024. They hired Quinn less than a month later.
Quinn, Kingsbury and quarterback Jayden Daniels teamed up to lead the Commanders offense to a turnaround 12-5 campaign in 2024, which led Daniels to Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
Daniels, who appeared in all 17 games as a rookie, was limited to just seven starts in 2025 due to multiple injuries. Kingsbury, the former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, is expected to draw interest from several NFL franchises looking to fill head coaching vacancies.
