18 dead, 13 hurt in 'dark day for Maine' after Lewiston mass shooting

At least 18 people were killed and 13 injured in a pair of mass shootings in Maine on Wednesday, Gov. Janet Mills announced Thursday.

Mills updated the death toll in a news conference on Thursday morning, offering condolences to the families of the victims in the shootings. Advertisement

Seven people were killed at Just-In-Time-Recreation, and eight of the victims were found dead at Schemengees Bar & Grille in Lewiston.

Three people died after being taken to local hospitals.

Eight of the victims killed had been identified.

“This is a dark day for Maine,” she said. “I know it’s hard for us to think about healing when our hearts are broken but I want every person in Maine to know that we will heal together. We are strong, we are resilient, we are a very caring people.”

State Police Col. William G. Ross identified 40-year-old Robert Card, as a suspect in the shooting and said he was facing eight counts of murder. He had previously been identified as a “person of interest” in the case.

Authorities in Maine continued to look for Card, whom Mike Sauschuck, commissioner of the Maine Department of Public Safety, said was still at large as of Thursday morning Advertisement

Police issued a shelter in place advisory in Bowdoin, urging all residents to remain indoors and keep their doors locked.

Hannaford Supermarkets, a major Northeast grocery chain, said it has closed all 58 of its stores there in accordance with the shelter-in-place order.

Portland city officials closed all public buildings except for city hall and its health department on Thursday as the manhunt continued. The Portland International Jetport also remained open.

Bowdoin’s town hall remained closed. Nearly every school and public gathering places remained closed.
