3 people injured as minivan plows into crowd at Pennsylvania festival

Three people, including a child and a woman in a wheelchair, were injured Monday evening in Pennsylvania after witnesses said a minivan plowed into a crowd.

Police were clearing Front Street in Harrisburg, as the three-day Kipona festival wrapped up around 6 p.m. EDT, when officers said the driver of a red minivan veered around parked cars and barricades.

“A woman went around and through barriers blocking traffic,” Harrisburg city spokesperson Michelle Moyer said in a statement. “She hit a woman in a wheelchair and a child. One of our public works employees was also injured trying to stop the woman.”

The driver was taken into custody, according to Moyer, who said she drove for six blocks before stopping.

Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams told local ABC affiliate WHTM that a 6-year-old boy was listed in critical condition at a local hospital. Two adults were listed in stable condition.

The city was celebrating the 109th annual Kipona Festival, which “brings together Native American communities from various tribes to celebrate and showcase their cultures through dance, music, storytelling, crafts and food.”
