The Cincinnati Bengals signed quarterbacks Mike White and Sean Clifford to their practice squad, sources familiar with the agreements told UPI on Tuesday.
The Bengals made the deals a day after coach Zac Taylor confirmed that starter Joe Burrow sustained a turf toe injury Sunday in a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Burrow, who is expected to undergo surgery, will be out indefinitely.
Second-string quarterback Jake Browning will be the Bengals’ starter in Burrow’s absence. Veteran backup Brett Rypien is on the Bengals’ practice squad, but is expected to be promoted to the active roster in Week 3.
White completed 61.4% of his throws for 2,247 yards, nine scores and 13 interceptions over the first 15 appearances of his career. The fifth-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2018 NFL Draft appeared in regular-season games for the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills. The Bills released him in August.
Clifford was a fifth-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 NFL Draft. He did not throw a pass, but made two appearances for the Packers as a rookie. Clifford spent last season on the Packers’ practice squad. He was waived in August.
The Bengals (2-0) will play the Minnesota Vikings (1-1) at 1 p.m. EDT Sunday in Minneapolis.
