UC Berkeley on Monday announced the launch of the Nancy Pelosi Institute for Representative Democracy.

The university in Berkeley, Calif., said in a press release the Nancy Pelosi Institute will be a nonpartisan institute for research, teaching and civic engagement. It will launch in January.

“The work of democracy is never finished, and securing its future is our greatest calling,” Pelosi said. “UC Berkeley has a long, proud history of challenging the status quo and producing leaders who run toward the greatest challenges of our time.”

NPI will be part of the Charles and Louise Travers Department of Political Science. It has received more than $35 million in donations toward endowment. University officials are targeting a $50 million fundraising goal.

Scott Straus, chair of the Department of Political Science, said in a statement that NPI will give students opportunities to “engage directly with the mechanics of leadership.”

“This is a watershed moment for our university — and a fantastic opportunity for our alumni and friends to join us in shaping it,” Straus said. “We envision the Pelosi Institute encompassing a range of bold centers and initiatives, ranging from a Center for the U.S. House of Representatives to a Global Dignity Lab to an AI & Democratic Innovation Initiative to a Center for the Study of Gender and Politics.”

The university is hosting a public exhibit on Pelosi’s life and work at the Bancroft Library next year.
