Driver surrenders after 1 killed, 13 hurt in birthday party hit-and-run

The driver who allegedly drove through a children’s birthday party in Maryland over the weekend, has turned himself in, according to authorities, who said one person was killed and 13 others, mostly children, were injured in the hit-and-run.

The suspect, identified as a 66-year-old man from Washington, D.C., turned himself in Sunday and was being interviewed by a crash investigator, the police department in Bladensburg, located northeast of the nation’s capital, said in a statement.

“Consultation with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney is underway and criminal charges are pending against the driver,” it said.

The hit-and-run occurred at about 10:14 p.m. EDT Saturday in the 4100 block of 56th Avenue in Bladensburg.

The local police department said a vehicle struck several people gathered in front of a residence for a child’s birthday party. The vehicle then fled the scene.

Authorities initially said 11 adults, and seven children were transported to local hospitals.

On Sunday, police said one of the adult victims died, identifying the deceased as 31-year-old Ashley Hernandez.

They also revised down the casualty list, saying five adults and eight children, ranging in age from 1 to 17 years, had been wounded.

Of the injured children, one was admitted to the hospital and is listed in stable condition.

Of the three adults remaining hospitalized, all are in stable condition. One is awaiting treatment, authorities said.
