OpenAI released a study examining the demographics of people using its ChatGPT AI model and what they are using it for.

The study released Tuesday, which was not immediately peer-reviewed, found that ChatGPT usage has primarily fallen into three categories: “practical guidance, seeking information and writing.”

“We’re still learning how people use AI in the wild, but this trend gives us a glimpse into where the value is and how it’s shifting,” OpenAI Chief Economist Aaron Chatterji said.

One of the most prominent findings was the jump in non-work-related messages, going from 53% in 2024 to 73% as of June.

About 56% of work-related messages were asking the bot to work on certain job tasks.

Roughly two-thirds of all the writing messages asked ChatGPT to edit, critique and translate text.

“Writing is a task that is common to nearly all white-collar jobs, and good written communication skills are among the top ‘soft’ skills demanded by employers,” the paper noted.

About half of all messages fell into the “asking” category, which research suggested that people use ChatGPT as an advisor.

The study also pointed out how the user base has grown to 10% of the world’s adult population.

Also about 37% of the users had feminine names, data shown in January 2024 showed As of mid 2025 the gap had narrowed down dramatically at 52%.
