Rooftop sniper dead after 2 ICE detainees shot in Dallas
A shooting at a Dallas Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility on Wednesday left two detainees wounded and a shooter dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, law enforcement said.
The shooting took place at about 7 a.m. CDT near Dallas Love Field airport, WFAA-TV in Dallas reported.
Police told KDAF-TV in Dallas that a sniper armed with a rifle on a nearby roof shot at the ICE facility.
Rounds found near the shooter were marked with messages that are “anti-ICE in nature,” the leader of the FBI’s Dallas field office told media, according to The New York Times.
It’s unclear whether any other shooters were involved.
The shooting happened while detainees were in the process of boarding or getting off a bus. In addition to the two detainees wounded, another person at the ICE facility was injured.
Todd Lyons, acting director of ICE, said none of those injured were law enforcement officials.
The shooter shot himself in the head as law enforcement officials approached him.
KXAS-TV in Dallas reported that no ICE officials were injured in the shooting, although local and federal leaders called attention to increased threats of violence against immigration officials amid a rise in raids and arrests.
Local police shut down parts of nearby Interstate 35E during rush-hour traffic, the Texas Department of Transportation said.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton called for prayers for the victims of the “heinous” shooting.
“We will continue to do everything in our power to combat the alarming increase of targeted attacks against ICE and all law enforcement by evil, twisted individuals,” he posted on X.
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem echoed Paxton’s call for prayers.
“While we don’t know the motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop,” she said on X.
